Gorm is a brand that was created and is run by Bianca Daniela Nachtman from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Growing up, Bianca was very passionate about collecting different found items; from rocks to leaves, to flowers etc., to create newfound gems. Through the speed and increase of fashion combined with the digital world entangling and growing with the pandemic, Gorm is constantly evolving and creating new ways to share the vision of individuality and creativity to the world.

Drey Motoh: Who are you and what do you do?

Bianca Daniela Nachtman: I am Bianca and I run a brand called Gorm. It is a “lost and found”, by finding a lot of items and materials which are repurposed into different creations. It’s all sustainable by using all the fabrics and items, to create one-off pieces until they turn into tiny masterpieces that allow people to express themselves and show individuality.

DM: What led you to start Gorm?

I started reworking Blazers just for myself and for a couple of friends. I was sweeping the floor of my old retail job, which allowed me to zone out and when ideas usually come to my head. I then had an idea to create a cowboy hat with fringe on it. I knew this needed to happen. Once I had a couple of blazers and the cowboy hat, I decided to create Gorm. I have always been kind of obsessed with the word gormandize from CBGB omfug, which is a punk bar venue where lots of punk bands played at. Using the word `gormandize as consumers of music, as well as it originally coming from the French Language which means “to overindulge”. I decided that I would bring it into the fashion world, Gorm.

When did you start Gorm?

I started making stuff in 2018, as well as the Instagram. In January 2019, I then made the website and Gorm was officially created. How did you find out about digital space and the fashion world? Essentially, how I came upon it was, I did a couple of virtual fashion shows at the start of all of this (pandemic) because right when it all started I was due to have it. All the work had to be digitized, which we are seeing more of now. I was then approached by a company in London, England to have a look at my new collection to be a part of their virtual showroom which will be featuring 7 designers, for London Fashion Week. I am excited to see how the garment turns out and have no idea what to expect, being that it is fully virtual and the physical pieces are still with me.

DM: What kept you motivated before and what keeps you motivated during the time we are going through right now?

For me before and now, it’s the same thing that motivates me, my own mind. I come up with ideas and have 0 patience, I need to see this thing come to fruition. I need to see this thing to exist & it needs to be seen on somebody, it needs to walk the earth. It’s my own mind yelling at me saying “make this, it’s going to be so sick”, which was the exact same before the pandemic. My process has remained the same but through the time that we have been given, it has allowed me to have a little downtime.
